Invest in Peterhead

On Wednesday 29 May, The Rediscover Peterhead team, alongside Aberdeenshire Council and Alan Jones Associates held the first public Invest in Peterhead entrepreneurs’ event.

The event was specifically aimed at budding business owners, or those with budding business ideas, ahead of the official Invest in Peterhead launch this summer. Thank you to everyone who came along to the event and participated in the conversation; there are lots of exciting and viable opportunities on bringing various options to the table which we are looking forward to bringing forward.

The focus of the Invest in Peterhead strategy is to encourage the use of empty business premises and help up-and-coming business owners with their future goals and plans. Five vacant properties have been selected by the committee and will be showcased to potential investors; alongside advice in setting up a business or identifying funding to help kick-start a dream project.

The event was hosted by Alan Jones Associates who offered one-to-one sessions to discuss options and break down barriers to taking on a town centre property.

The Invest in Peterhead project has been running since April 2018 and will be launched in June this year. The RP team have been working with Aberdeenshire Council to create a marketing strategy to run until 2022 to attract investors to Peterhead. The aim of the initiative is to fill vacant space and create a vision to attract new investors/developers and businesses to Peterhead town centre to generate a vibrant, diverse and upmarket town centre.

The north east of Scotland is an area currently going through tremendous transformation, and significant changes and investment in and around Peterhead over the last two to three years has taken place; over £305m investment in completed projects, and a further £200m planned in the next couple of years.

Local business owners, local councillors and several other interested parties came along to the event. If you, or anyone you know is thinking about starting a business in Peterhead, or thinking to expand your existing business, please reach out to: alanjonesassociates@btopenworld.com

Peterhead Seafood Festival 2019

This year’s annual seafood festival will take place on Saturday 14 September, from 10 am until 4 pm.

Last year [Rediscover Peterhead] launched the pilot event, which attracted over 4000 visitors to the town centre. With additional funding from NESFLAG this year, and support from Aberdeenshire Council, GP Shipping Services, and Seafood Scotland; the Peterhead Seafood Festival will be a bigger event, showcasing Peterhead’s fishing heritage and world-class seafood.

The festival will take place across the entire town centre across various zones; the ‘Fish Market’ zone in Broad Street, a children’s zone in Erroll Street, a live music zone in Drummer’s Corner, along with two further zones covering local arts and crafts, bars and an array of Peterhead’s finest delicacies. Award winning Independent Fish Retailer of the Year 2018, Peterhead Fish Company will be at the festival again this year, alongside one of Scotland’s best-loved Skippers, Jimmy Buchan of Amity Fish from the television series Trawler Men.

Live cooking demonstrations will be offered from The Frankittis, local chefs, and practical demonstrations such as net-mending and fish-filleting. With special thanks to Ideas in Partnership who are helping to run and event this year and are starting to sign-up local businesses to take part in the event by having a stall of their own.

Last year; award-wining fish and chip shop Zanres had table service fish and chips, who we welcome again this year; and invite all businesses within Peterhead to contact us if they would like to have their own stall or ideas to showcase on the day.

We are very excited about this year’s event and took on board all comments from last year’s evaluation forms completed by the members of the public to improve the event, and we welcome everyone to Peterhead that day to celebrate the town’s heritage and Scotland’s finest seafood.

Stall availability is limited, so we would encourage local traders especially those in the seafood industry to secure one at their earliest convenience.

We envisage an increase in footfall to the town that day, so would invite business to grasp this opportunity and celebrate by participating in a promotion of their business during the day on their premises, and in the evening to encourage town centre visitors to stay and enjoy our many bars/restaurants and live music establishments.

For more information, or to enquire about having a stall on the day, please contact: Carol Grove from Ideas in Partnership: carol@ideasinpartnership.co.uk

Phase two of the gull nest and egg removal project started in April and will run until June 2019. Presley Pest Control have been contracted again this year to carry out the works. To date, 61 nests and 80 eggs have been removed. This is a significant reduction in gull nests and eggs from this stage of the removal cycle last year: 185 nests and 501 eggs.

Contractor GutterZ took to the streets in April, to clear all rainwater gutters and dispose of waste; to inspect same and make good where required within Peterhead Improvement District area.

Among the items found in the gutters were a half bottle of brandy, two tennis balls, six sections of old window frame and a household mop.

They also found an empty litre bottle of sparkling wine, several soft drinks cans, a toy arrow and six marbles.

35 slipped slates were also identified, and GutterZ handed them back to property owners to be used for future roof repairs.

Last year, Peterhead contracted FCCS to perform a deep clean of the streets within the Improvement District area. This was the first time the streets had been cleaned in over a decade, and the results were very good for the pilot year. RP are currently going out to tender for the second phase of the deep clean which will be carried out this summer.

Funding has been secured for town centre CCTV. £79,000 funding has been secured from the Scottish Government’s town centre fund. Rediscover Peterhead are delighted to be running this project and hope to have the installation in place by the end of the year.
